Chess Club and Chess Team
Chess is a popular activity among Da Vinci students, with interest ranging from casual players to more serious tournament players. To help meet these varied interests, the chess program in 2010-11 will work differently than in the past. In place of the daily morning chess program, we will offer lunch and Friday sessions for both casual and more serious players.
Chess Team
This program is for players who have a serious desire to compete in tournaments. Participants must be willing to compete in a minimum of six tournaments during the year. This program will provide 75 minutes weekly of small group instruction by Grandmaster Nikola Mitkov. Instruction will be divided into two groups by age and ability.
Grandmaster Mitkov will meet with the chess team one day per week during lunch or from 3:15-4:30 on Fridays as his schedule permits. He will also help coordinate sign-ups for the chess team tournaments.
The cost is $550 for the year, which covers approximately 37 hours of small group instruction from Grandmaster Mitkov. Tournament entry fees are not included and must be paid separately.
Students who wish to try the small group instruction for ten weeks may do so for $190. If you have already signed up for the Chess Club and wish to change to the Chess Team program for the first ten weeks, you will only pay an additional $100.
Chess Club
This program is for students who wish to play recreational chess on Fridays after school from 3:15-4:30. Chess Club members may choose to play in tournaments as part of the Da Vinci team, but it is not required.
Chess Club sessions will be held every Friday during the school year when students are in session, except for Fridays immediately prior to major vacation breaks. There will be approximately 30 sessions during the school year. The cost is $250 for the year.
